New Tattoo Aftercare

I've been getting a lot of messages lately on my Facebook page from people asking about tattoo aftercare.

I work at Electric Zombie, and aftercare sheets vary between shops, but this is what's on ours:

NEW TATTOO AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Leave bandage on for 1-4 hours.
  2. Rinse under warm water (NO SUBMERGING)
  3. Gradually increase heat until it gets as hot as you can stand it. (This will allow pores to open and rinse out blood, body fluids, and excess ink.
  4. Wash tattoo with hand and anti-bacterial unscented soap until tattoo is smooth to touch after rinse. Tattoo should not feel slimy when done.
  5. Air dry for 15-20 minutes.
  6. Apply a very thin coat of ointment (Bacitracin, Neosporin) 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days.
  7. Wipe off excess ointment with a paper towel.
  8. Switch to a mild lotion (cocoa butter, Aveeno, Jergens, Lubriderm) after 2-3 days.
Seeping is normal! If this occurs, repeat steps 2-8.

TANNING MAY CAUSE SCABBING OR BLISTERING!

Healing time: 2-3 weeks

DO NOT:
  • no re-bandaging
  • no submerging
  • no pools, ponds, lakes, bathtubs, hot tubs
  • no shaving or waxing of tattooed area
  • no tanning or excessive sun exposure
  • no scratching or picking - it will come off on its own
